A brand identity for a Vancouver Island marine communications company. The lighthouse mark signals both maritime heritage and modern technology.

The Brief

Reedel Marine Services has been providing marine electronics and communication systems on Vancouver Island since 1994. Richard needed a brand refresh that would honour the company’s long-standing reputation while modernizing the visual identity for a new generation of marine clients.

The logo had to communicate two things simultaneously: deep maritime heritage and cutting-edge communication technology. It needed to work on business cards, letterpress-printed stationery, and marine industry trade materials.

The Approach

The concept centred on a lighthouse, the universal symbol of maritime guidance and safety, enhanced with signal waves radiating from the beacon. The lighthouse grounds the brand in its marine identity, while the communication waves signal the technology side of the business. A flowing wave form at the base adds movement and reinforces the coastal setting.

The mark went through six rounds of refinement, fine-tuning the proportions of the lighthouse, the weight of the signal waves, and the relationship between the icon and the bold italic typography. The “since 1994” designation was integrated into the composition, reinforcing the decades of trust the company has built.

The business card design went through eight iterations, exploring different layouts, UV spot finishes, and the right balance of information density for a technically-oriented marine services company.

The Result

The Reedel Marine Services identity gives the company a mark that bridges tradition and technology. The lighthouse is immediately recognizable as marine, and the signal waves add a modern dimension that competitors’ generic anchor-and-wave logos don’t convey. The deep navy blue palette feels authoritative and nautical without being cliched.
